Artist Statement: Rosane Volchan O'Conor

Volchan O'Conor is influenced by both music and biology. Her installations are a three dimensional rendition of her narrative paper monoprints in which she visualizes the idea of rhythm and most of all, the idea of polyphony; where each melodic line has an autonomous function but also synthesizes perfectly within the whole. She organizes structural lines, symmetric and asymmetric, to produce a sonorous visual layer. Like in a polyphonic texture, these linear structures aid in the perception of themes and motifs, creating a distinctive rhythmic identity. Just as counterpoint techniques give melody depth, so do the multiple linear planes in her work create visual depth. As with the composition of a contra punctual piece, she employs the techniques of selecting a small segment of my work and manipulating it to create retrogrades, augmentations and diminutions, and inversions. She is inspired by the microscopic; protozoa, cells, nerves, and by the macroscopic; land formations, planets, galaxies. Her monoprints and site specific installations present an environment that is both micro and macro, organic and linear, large and detailed, harmonious and chaotic.

Web Series: AmeriCooking

The AmeriCooking Show is a 262 (four-minute) episode English-language web series introducing American food culture to a young Chinese audience.

In the kitchen, young American chefs demonstrate how to prepare their favorite home cooked meals, snacks and regional treats (think Jambalaya, Fish tacos, Funnel Cake, S'mores, Matzo Balls, Meatball Subs, Horchata, Gingerbread Cookies, etc).

Out on the streets of Los Angeles and Boulder, the audience takes a bite out of fusion food trucks and farmers markets, quenches their thirst at craft breweries and tea factories, sees where it all comes from in urban gardens and dairy farms, and chows down at hotdog stands and chocolateries.

As director/producer/editor, my responsibilities included:
Casting, location scouting, shoot schedule, budget, equipment rental/purchase, costume, directing crew, communicating with the Beijing-based client in solely in Chinese, post-production.

240 episodes shot in 20 days of production. The remaining 22 episodes were hosted by Erika Volchan O'Conor
